Food Borne on the Rise

In addition to Food Defense, the world is facing challenges that are on the rise regarding food safety. This information comes combining information from microbiologists from America, Asia Pacific and Europe.

"Organizations across the world are improperly using manure and human fecal matter for agrifoods. The centuries-old traditions of using human excreta on farmland is widespread in Asia, specially in China and Vietnam... More than 75% of farmers in the Nghe An province in Central Vietnam use fresh or partially composted human excreta as fertilizer for farmlands" States Michael P. Doyle, PhD a Reagent professor of food microbiology at the University of Georgia, USA, a leading authority in biological matters of food safety. Moving pathogens from one world region to another just aggravates the situation.

While there are tools that help to safeguard such issues of food safety (and to equally safeguard food defense). These needs controls that relate to food relating management systems issues. In an attempt to operate in free market economy ironically the same compulsory requirements to invoke "certify" needs to find ways to reduce costs. Why? Because agricultural and food producers need to seek ways to improve activities which at times leads to circumvent the many schemes they need to fulfill by impositions of different rules in the light that the forceful compulsory requirements are monopolized. We are not taking about legal requirements, these need be fulfilled regardless (such as 21 CFR 110, 21 CFR 120...), we talk about management schemes | systems impositions in the hope to release safe products in the food supply. There are dozens if not hundreds of food safety scheme solemnly with the intent to sell certifications and at times not much to do with food quality and safety.

Some of the concerns illness are Shigella, E. coli, Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Cyclospora, Campylobacters. While some of the concerns continue studies and research in better detection, control, mitigation et al BRS' own concept "PERM" (prevent, eliminate, reduce, mitigate... and if not, get out of the food business!).

Management systems such as Food Safety Management Systems ISO 22000, ISO 9001 | ISO 15161, HACCP MS (CODEX) and combination of ISO 14001 for the AgriFoods are best suited because these carry global recognition when provided by a competent and truly impartial conformity assessment body.
